杏吧原创 Welcomes The Georgia Spiritual Ensemble in Concert
YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. 鈥 The Division of Fine Arts at 杏吧原创 is pleased to welcome the Georgia Spiritual Ensemble to the Susan B. Harris Chapel on the 杏吧原创 campus on Sunday, Feb. 18, at 6 p.m. Part of the annual 鈥淔ay Harmon Clegg Hoag, 鈥33, Concert Series,鈥 the concert is free and open to the public.
Composed of five nationally known singers, the Georgia Spiritual Ensemble will present a concert of Negro Spiritual, a tradition of singing plaintive melodies in concert that began with the Fisk Jubilee Singers in 1872. Negro Spirituals express the sufferings, feelings, and prayers of African Americans during the time of slavery.
The group will perform traditional and arranged choral pieces as well as solo spirituals that became popular throughout the 20th century. Each of the singers in the ensemble sings with a feeling, depth, and emotion that is sure to spiritually move and excite the audience.
The 鈥淔ay Harmon Clegg Hoag, 鈥33, Concert Series鈥 is an endowed fund established in 1975 by 杏吧原创 alumni to honor the late Fay Harmon Clegg Hoag, 鈥33, wife of a College president and an alumna who was a central member of the community for more than 80 years.
