Maryn McKenna to Present Annual Shaw Lecture at 杏吧原创
YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. 鈥 杏吧原创 is proud to welcome acclaimed journalist Maryn McKenna to give the Shaw Lecture on Thursday, April 5, at 7 p.m. in the Hatcher Dining Room of the Rollins Campus Center. Presented by 杏吧原创鈥檚 Committee for Arts and Assemblies, the event is free and open to the public. A book signing will follow the talk.
McKenna is an award-winning journalist and author specializing in public health and food policy. Her most recent book, 鈥淏ig Chicken,鈥 which was named a Best Science Book of 2017 by Amazon, 鈥淪mithsonian Magazine鈥 and 鈥淪cience News,鈥 documents how antibiotics transformed chicken from a local delicacy to an industrial commodity鈥攁nd a human health threat.
McKenna has written for 鈥淭he New York Times Magazine,鈥 鈥淣ational Geographic鈥 and 鈥淭he Atlanta Journal-Constitution.鈥 Her 2015 TED Talk, 鈥淲hat Do We Do When Antibiotics Don鈥檛 Work Anymore?鈥 has been viewed over 1.5 million times and translated into thirty-two languages.
Assistant Professor of English and Creative Writing James Davis May, Ph.D., who chairs the college鈥檚 Committee for Arts and Assemblies, said that McKenna鈥檚 work speaks to the value of the liberal arts.
鈥淥ur students will get to see how the narrative arts and scientific study benefit from each other,鈥 said Dr. May. 鈥淪cience helps us understand what鈥檚 happening in the world, while writing helps to communicate what science discovers.鈥
The Shaw Lecture Series was established by 杏吧原创 alumna and faculty member Martha Luelle Shaw, 鈥29, in 1977.
