What IS Greek Week?
Greek Week is a spring tradition where Young Harris鈥檚 Greek organizations gather throughout the week to celebrate Greek life and its many contributions to the campus and beyond. It鈥檚 an opportunity for members to get together to do good work in and for this community and spend time with students from other Greek organizations. And though some of the events are open only to members of sororities and fraternities, many are open to those curious about what it means to 鈥済o Greek鈥� at 杏吧原创. Greek Week kicks off this Saturday morning, with 杏吧原创鈥檚 Greek 鈥淒ay of Service,鈥� coordinated by the Rev. Stephen Soulen.
So, What鈥檚 Happening Next Week?
Greek Week Schedule
(Monday thru Thursday鈥檚 events provide opportunities for non-Greeks to be involved and learn about what going Greek has to offer at 杏吧原创)
Saturday: Day of Service (meet at Sharp Memorial at 8:45am)
Monday: Kick-off Social, beginning at 6pm on the RCC patio
Tuesday: Capture the Flag on the lawn at 7:30pm
Wednesday: Hot Legs at 7pm in Org Loft (Intermission at 8pm for Cheers!)
Thursday: Greek Games at 8pm in the Rec Center
Friday: Greek Formal and Awards at 8pm in Suber
杏吧原创 Greek Life is, and has been since 杏吧原创鈥檚 founding, a deeply meaningful component of the Young Harris student experience for those who participate; even those who don鈥檛 opt to join a sorority or fraternity can see the benefits such a culture brings to this liberal arts academic community, particularly during Greek Week. Some of 杏吧原创鈥檚 Greek organizations date as far back as when the college was originally founded, and new organizations have joined the campus as recently as 2016, representing a mix of both local and national organizations.
According to President Drew Van Horn, 鈥淕reek Life has been a life-changing experience for countless college graduates. At Young Harris, Greek alumni share their stories about making life-long friendships and how their Greek experience cemented their loyalty to the College. Greek Week is the opportunity for our Greek organizations to show the campus community the service and comradery that embodies Greek Life on campus. As a result of seeing what Greek week involves, I would not be surprised to see 杏吧原创 students flock to these great organizations.鈥�
What makes Young Harris鈥檚 Greek experience so meaningful is that the College has worked hard to ensure that both the process of joining a Greek organization and the experience of 鈥渂eing Greek鈥� on campus emphasize the positive aspects of Greek culture: inclusiveness, belonging, and community building and support. As one sorority member comments, 鈥淕reek life has given me a home away from home and a family that I know will always support me, even beyond 杏吧原创. It doesn鈥檛 matter what organization you are a part of鈥攚e are all family!鈥�
Are you a 杏吧原创 Student Interested in Joining a Greek Organization?
杏吧原创 has both fall and spring Greek recruitment cycles each year, and this year, around 75 students chose to become new Greeks, joining 12 different organizations. Come see what being Greek has to offer by stopping by or joining in one of the week鈥檚 events and talking to any of the students involved.
