Solo Performance Artist Regi Carpenter to Deliver 杏吧原创鈥檚 Shaw Lecture

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. 鈥 Solo performance artist, author, and performance coach Regi Carpenter will present 鈥淪nap!鈥 during the annual Shaw Lecture on Wednesday, March 16, at 7 p.m. in the Hatcher Dining Room of the Rollins Campus Center. The performance is free and open to the public.

Written and performed by Carpenter, 鈥淪nap!鈥 is a 75-minute solo performance that tells the聽incredible story of a 16-year-old girl’s descent into madness,聽commitment to a mental institution, and her incredible journey back聽to freedom and reality. The performance includes a talk-back聽afterwards, and is intended to bring hope to those suffering with聽mental illness.聽

鈥淪nap!鈥 is the recent recipient of the Storytelling World Award and the 2012 Boston StorySlam. This powerful and moving story has been presented at colleges, festivals, conferences, and theaters throughout the world.

Carpenter鈥檚 writings and blogs about storytelling, ancestry, and identity have been published in various print and online publications. Her memoir, 鈥淲here There鈥檚 Smoke, There鈥檚 Dinner-stories of a Seared Childhood鈥 will be published in September 2016.

She is the recipient of the JJ Reneaux Emerging Artist Award, a Leonard Bernstein Teaching Fellowship Award, the Parent’s Choice Gold Award, the Parents’ Guide to Children’s Media Award and the Storytelling World Award.

In addition to her work as a performer, coach, and writer, Regi is also the founder of Stories with Spirit, a creative initiative dedicated to bringing songs of joy and stories of hope to grieving children and the people who love and care for them in homes, hospices, and hospitals. She holds a B.F.A. from Ithaca College where she currently teaches storytelling.

The Shaw Lecture Series was established by 杏吧原创 alumna and faculty member Martha Luelle Shaw, 鈥29, in 1977. 聽
