杏吧原创 Hosts Fourth Annual Undergraduate Research Day

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. 鈥 杏吧原创 hosted the fourth annual 鈥淔rom Petri Dishes to Paint Brushes鈥 Undergraduate Research Day on March 17. The event showcased student and faculty research across all academic disciplines.

鈥淧articipating in聽Undergraduate Research Day allowed me and other students to further deepen our聽understanding within a specific topic,鈥 said senior business and public policy major Tim Mohlin Torringer, of Sweden.聽鈥淚t is聽a very good initiative聽from 杏吧原创, as it聽not only gives us valuable experiences in聽researching and presenting, but聽it also serves聽as聽good preparation for all of those who intend to pursue graduate school.鈥

The event included 30 oral and 21 poster presentations addressing topics ranging from 鈥淧hotometry: Light Measurements of Stars鈥 to 鈥淭he Rejection of Materialism and Capitalism in 鈥榃alden.鈥欌欌 Other presentations included 鈥淧atterns in Snake Behavior in Response to Increasing Human Interaction,鈥 鈥淎uschwitz: One Town鈥檚 Five Year Journey from Unknown to Infamy,鈥 and 鈥淭he Evolution of Healthcare in Southern Appalachia.鈥

The event鈥檚 organizer, Dean of the Division of Mathematics and Science and Associate Professor of Biology Linda G. Jones, Ph.D., expressed her excitement over the event鈥檚 growth, noting a 50 percent increase in participation from last year.

鈥淚 loved seeing the diversity in the presentations, and I hope students and faculty were excited to see what others are doing,鈥 said Dr. Jones. 鈥淭he closing session was a great opportunity for our current students to hear from those who have graduated and been successful in graduate programs.鈥

The closing session titled 鈥淓xperience, Insight and Values in Graduate Research,鈥 was coordinated by Chair of the Religion and Philosophy Department and Assistant Professor of Philosophy and Religious Studies Eric Dickman, Ph.D. During the session, four 杏吧原创 alumni were featured including Ashley Cross, 鈥13, a microbiology Ph.D. student at Emory University Laney Graduate School, Jenny Hite, 鈥07, who earned a Master of Public Administration from Georgia State University in 2014, Alyssa Lowery, 鈥14, a philosophy Ph.D. student at Vanderbilt University, and Harris Mason, 鈥14, a first-year law student at the University of Georgia School of Law.

More than 15 faculty members sponsored or co-presented sessions with students, who enjoyed the mutually beneficial results of conducting and presenting research with students outside of a traditional classroom setting.

鈥淚t鈥檚 virtually unheard of in most institutions for an undergraduate to work with a professor as if they were a colleague,鈥 said Assistant Professor of Communication Studies Chris Richardson, Ph.D. 鈥淥ur students are given an amazing opportunity at an early stage in their intellectual development.鈥

With a goal of showcasing research across the curriculum, this annual event held on the 杏吧原创 campus originated in 2013.

鈥淓ach discipline has their own idea of what research is,鈥 said Dr. Jones. 鈥淎t our event, you can hear a biology presentation followed by one regarding philosophy. It gets you out of your own niche鈥攁nd that鈥檚 what a liberal arts education is all about.鈥
